5 Tips for Reaching the Top of the Promotion List

If you have your sights set upon moving up the corporate ladder, finding ways to make a good impression on your boss is essential. Unfortunately, many professionals are unsure about how to maintain the proper balance between standing out in a crowd and coming across as a “brown noser.” By keeping these simple tips in mind, however, you will be sure to grab the attention of the higher-ups as you move up the corporate ladder.

Tip #1: Be Honest

Your credibility is key to being trusted with more responsibility, so always be honest about what is going on at work. Whether a project wasn’t completed on time or you made an error on a report, be honest about what took place. By being honest, you build trust and prove to your boss that you are someone who can be counted on.

Tip #2: Speak Up

If you have an idea that will be beneficial to the company in some way, don’t be afraid to speak up. Even if the idea isn’t used, your boss will certainly respect the fact that you were courageous enough to share your ideas. Furthermore, your boss will appreciate that you are someone who is able to think freely and bring new ideas to table.

Tip #3: Ask Questions

If you are ever unsure about what you are supposed to do, it is always best to ask questions. Rather than second-guessing yourself and finding yourself having to redo parts of the project, clarifying the instructions will ensure the project is done correctly the first time. Your boss will certainly appreciate that you are handling the loose ends and that you are capable of thinking on your own. As you volunteer for these new tasks, subtly remind your boss of the past successes you’ve had and why you can handle this task. This way, you will continually keep the past fresh in his or her mind.

Tip #5: Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

While you should certainly take on tasks whenever you can, you shouldn’t be afraid to say no if your plate is too full. If you simply cannot take on an additional task without letting other responsibilities slip, let your supervisor know. Be respectful as you tell your boss you would rather tend to your more important tasks before you taking on something new.
