MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor schools Superintendent Jackie Hoynes has decided to retire in 2012, ending 10 years at the helm of one of Ohio’s largest school districts.
Hoynes, 59, said the school board planned to vote in May to extend her current contract, which expires in August, 2012, another two years but she decided not to accept it.
“I believe if you sign a contract you are committed to it and I realized that I need to do something a little less stressful,” she said. “This gives the board a chance to find a replacement.”
Hoynes said she leaves the district in good shape. It has been rated excellent by the state in seven out of the last eight years and is on good financial footing after recovering from a surprise multimillion-dollar deficit in 2003 that resulted in layoffs and a crisis in community confidence.
The district adopted an internationally known program designed to prevent bullying to have a uniform program across the system, Hoynes said.
The district dealt with several student suicides between July 2005 and October 2008.
Hoynes, who is married to Plain Dealer baseball writer Paul Hoynes, has been with the Mentor schools about 30 years. She was appointed interim superintendent in May, 2002 and named to the position a year later.
She has no plans to take another administrative position.
“Ideally I’d like to teach at the college level,” she said. “I’ve been teaching courses at Ashland University for administrators that want to be superintendents.”
